3 Winter Lattes to Make From Home

These three yummy latte recipes are perfect to enjoy on a cold winter day. They are also some of our most popular winter latte specials from Som’s Cafe modified to be made at home using ingredients that you can find at the grocery store: The Campfire Mocha, Salted Caramel Latte, and Cinnamon Bun Latte. To see a video click the link at the bottom of the post.

To begin with all of these lattes are a variation on the basic latte instructions which are featured in our previous blog post and YouTube video, “How to Make a Latte at Home.” If you haven’t read that blog post yet, I would recommend doing so to make sure you have the basics down before experimenting with new recipes. https://somscafe.com/how-to-make-a-latte-cappuccino-at-home/

1. Campfire Mocha

Ingredients

  • 3 pumps/ squeezes Hershey’s syrup
  • 3 oz brewed espresso
  • Warm and frothed milk
  • Marshmallows
  • Graham cracker crumbs

Directions

For a 16 oz mug, squeeze Hershey’s Syrup into the bottom of the mug. Add brewed espresso and stir to incorporate the chocolate and espresso. Next, take your warm milk and holding back the foam, fill the mug to about 1/2 inch below the rim of the mug. Top with marshmallows and a sprinkle of graham cracker crumbs. The marshmallows will melt into the hot mocha and make your drink taste like a smore with the graham crackers crumbs. This is the same way would put marshmallows in hot chocolate, but with espresso added. If you own a crème brulee torch, you can also toast the marshmallows on top of your mocha to create a more authentic smores experience.

2. Salted Caramel Latte

Ingredients

  • 3 pumps/ squeezes of caramel sauce (about 2.5 tsp if it’s from a jar)
  • 3 oz brewed espresso
  • Warm and frothed milk
  • Sea salt

Directions

For a 16 oz mug, squeeze caramel sauce into the bottom of the mug, then add a pinch of sea salt.  Add brewed espresso and stir to incorporate the caramel, espresso and salt.  Next, take your warm milk and holding back the foam, fill the mug to about 1/2 inch below the rim of the mug. Then scoop the foam onto the top of the milk. Drizzle caramel sauce on top of the foam and add one shake or a pinch of salt on top of the caramel drizzle. You can also leave off the foam and top this latte with whip cream and caramel if you prefer.

3. Cinnamon Bun Latte

Ingredients

  • 2 pumps/ squeezes white chocolate sauce
  • 1 tsp Brown Sugar
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • 3oz brewed espresso
  • Warm and frothed milk

Directions

This recipe requires a simple variation on the basic latte recipe to infuse the milk with the cinnamon so that it truly tastes like a cinnamon roll.  When you heat your milk in a pan on the stovetop, add about two dashes of ground cinnamon and stir that into the milk as is heats up. Then froth the milk with the immersion blender to further incorporate the cinnamon into the milk, ensuring that there are no clumps of ground cinnamon going into your drink.

Into a 16oz mug, add 3 squeezes of white chocolate sauce. (This ingredient can be a little harder to find but World Market has a good selection of gourmet coffee syrups and would be a good place to look. You can also use a white hot chocolate mix.) Next, add 1tsp brown sugar and 3oz brewed espresso. Stir the sauce and sugar into the espresso well to make sure all the ingredients are melted together. Next, add the cinnamon infused warm milk while holding back the foam. Fill the cup with the milk up to about 1/2 in. below the rim of the cup.  Give your drink another stir just to get the cinnamon milk mixed together well with the other ingredients. Scoop the foam on top of the milk and add a dash of cinnamon on top of the foam. You can also add a drizzle of white chocolate sauce to make it like the icing drizzled on top of a cinnamon bun.
